“If anything matters then everything matters. Because you are important, everything you do is important. Every time you forgive, the universe changes; every time you reach out and touch a heart or a life, the world changes; with every kindness and service, seen or unseen, my purposes are accomplished and nothing will be the same again.” William Paul Young – The Shack
I was on social media the other day and someone posted a photo of people who were enslaved in Libya, ready to be SOLD now, in the 21st century. I must admit, I saw it but I didn’t take the time to really look. My boyfriend was concerned about it and pointed it out to me. Afterwards, I started seeing more news about it until I saw heartbreaking images of people being tied and wounded, ready to be sold. As I looked deeper my heart ached and it got me thinking that what if the generations that have gone before us never stood up for what was right and didn’t fight for equal rights for women, petition to end wars or work hard to abolish slavery when it showed its ugly head? Imagine if they turned a blind eye and just got on with their lives: where would we be today? We wouldn’t have the freedom that we do! What type of life would we have? We probably wouldn’t be able to live in the freedom we do. That generation wanted better for each other, for their families and for those to come in the future. They wanted better for the world.
Sometimes, it’s easier to turn a blind eye when other fellow humans are suffering around the world but the reality is, life is so fragile nowadays, and at any given moment, you never know what could happen in the world.
The issue going on in Libya has been burning on my heart, and I’m faced with the reality that it’s ACTUALLY NOT OK for me to continue life as normal whilst other people are suffering in other parts of the world. When I look at the life of Jesus, He didn’t just have sympathy, He had compassion, which then enabled Him to do something about the needs around Him.
I know some needs are so big that we might at times not know where to start or how, but with the world we live in, and with the growing rise of social media, we are able to raise awareness like never before and be a voice to those that can’t speak up for themselves.
If one person matters, then all people matter
Whilst on social media, I also noticed that there was a protest happening in London at the Libyan embassy and I thought, ‘that’s something I can do.’ I might not physically be able to go to Libya but I can do something to help, however small. We only have to do a bit of research to realise that we can partner with other people who are currently doing their part to help organisations that are doing their part to make a difference.
If we don’t rise up and do something what will happen to the people in the future? What type of society will they live in?
If one person matters, then all people matter, no matter the background.
Much Love
