I was talking with a friend a few nights ago about the highs and lows of life, and how, in the midst of one or the other, one thing remains consistent: God. For me, 2018 has been a year of growth and healing. Healing from wounds, some recent, and others from many years ago. To get to the next level in our lives we sometimes need to deal with unresolved issues so that we can fully break free from our past and take hold of what lies ahead. I’m not saying you have to be perfect in order to move forward, be it pursuing your dreams, moving countries or getting into a relationship, however, unresolved issues can stop us from being our best selves and in some cases can hinder various areas of our lives. Allowing our hearts to confront our pain, and the pain we might have caused others, earnestly asking for forgiveness and forgiving those that have hurt us – or maybe even forgiving ourselves -brings clarity and freedom. I know it’s easier said than done, but taking that one step and talking to someone about what we have been through can help us to understand ourselves better and deal with what’s going on inside.
We can’t always address everything all at once, but we can choose one thing to work through. You are not alone, there’s a God whose love for you never changes no matter where you find yourself. He can take the pain, the brokenness, the mistakes, and bring restoration. When we decide that we want the freedom more than we want to stay the same, we will see a change in our lives.
“Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.” – Barack Obama
When you begin to work through your past hurts you will be amazed at how much lighter you feel, you will realise how much space within you was occupied by unresolved conflict.
Don’t allow what has happened to you to stop you from facing the giants and overcoming them, don’t let what they said paralyse you from forgiving and setting your heart free, don’t allow what you don’t have stop you from living a life of purpose. Start with where you are, start with what you have, take one step forward. Decide as you go into 2019 that the freedom of your heart is worth pursuing, decide that the dreams of your heart deserve a chance to become a reality, because someone in the future is waiting to read your book, to hear your song, to hear your story, to take their step so they too can find freedom.
So … Darling heart, It’s time to set your heart free, and dream again.
